HASAN A. RIZVI is an academic, a development professional and a technology entrepreneur. Trained as a physicist, the first ten years of his career spanned research in the fields of astrophysics, cosmology and high energy physics. During the last four years of this period he worked at CERN – the European Centre for Nuclear and High Energy Physics – in an international collaboration as a fellow of the World Lab. But apart from physics research at CERN he saw the development of the World Wide Web (WWW) literally in front of his eyes and has been fascinated by the Internetworking technologies ever since. After his return to Pakistan, he launched the first nationwide email and offline Internet service under the auspices of the Sustainable Development Networking Programme (SDNP), a global initiative of UNDP. Later, while serving as the Director of SDNP, he helped set up a number of development information services on the Web, especially the Pakistan Development Gateway and its allied portals. While still serving as the Head of Education, Communication and Knowledge Management at IUCN, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, he helped launch the Five Rivers Technologies (FRT) in 2003 and has been working as its CEO since then. FRT has distinguished itself for a number of pioneering ventures including Pakistan’s first hand held computer and state-of-the-art work in developing software for centralized computing and desktop virtualization. Lately, it has established itself as an innovative outfit developing mobile applications for different commercially popular platforms like iPhone, Android and Blackberry etc..
